Private Swim Lessons

Often, the most effective way to learn to swim is by enlisting the help of a private instructor.  UIC Campus Recreation offers private swimming lessons for participants of all ages.  Swimmers receive personalized instruction based on their needs and current swim abilities.

Parent & Tot Water Orientation (Ages 6 months – 3 years)

Help your babies and toddlers develop swimming readiness and become comfortable in the water.  Children must be at least 6 months old by the start date of the class to enroll.  One parent or caregiver must accompany each child in the water.  Children who are not toilet-trained must wear a swim diaper and tight-fitting plastic pants over diaper (NO disposable or cloth diapers).  8 (45 minutes) lessons.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training (Ages 16 & Up)

This class will teach Lifeguard candidates the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies.  The course content and activities prepare candidates to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.  All participants must meet the following prerequisites prior registering;

  • Must be at least 15 years-old by the first day of class
  • Swim 300 yards continuously using the following: 100 yards front crawl, 100 yards breast stroke, and 100 yards front crawl or breast stroke
  • Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breast stroke, surface dive to a depth of 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object (under 100 seconds)

Those who complete the class and pass the final written and practical exam (28.5 hours) will receive the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid certification, the CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification and the AED for the Professional Rescuer certification.  Cost including materials $245.00.
